Has it sunk into nearly every single major line yet The final fantasy A game between I and XII now available on Switch? That’s thanks to the release of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series this week, which was long, long Overdue
When the games launched on Steam and mobile between 2021 and 2022, many were happy that the classic six Final Fantasy games were finally being made more accessible. But when it came to Pixel remasters there was one big talking point around the world – the font.
The fonts were not popular in the original Pixel Remaster release, at least in the West. For many, it clashed with the retro pixel art visuals, and the thin, sterile style wasn’t the most pleasing on the eyes when playing on a PC screen.
Fans worked to create mods to “fix” the font using variations from Final Fantasy I and II: Dawn of Souls on the GBA to the chunky pixel typeface of Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. Various guides, including this one from the RPG site, detail many ways you can get “good” fonts and improve your experience with these classics.
However, it soon became clear that Japan did not have the same problem. While not sporting pixel-style fonts, the Japanese font was cleaner, a little thicker, and — most importantly — much easier to read.
When Square Enix announced the console version last year (in the middle, mind you…), fans hoped that the gap between the games’ releases on PC and consoles would give Square enough time to “fix” that font. for good. And, luckily, the developer delivered.
Along with an interchangeable soundtrack and other additions like EXP, gil, and ability point modifiers, the console versions of Pixel Remasters let you switch between the original PC font, called ‘Modernized’, and the new ‘Classic’ font, which is pixel-based. You can swap between these in the menu at any time in all six games.
